Piper Shores Celebrates 5th Anniversary
August 15, 2006
Piper Shores, Maine’s first and only lifecare retirement community today announced its 5th anniversary. Although the planning, licensing and construction started several years earlier, Piper Shores opened its doors and the first residents moved into their apartments and cottages in August, 2001. To celebrate the milestone, Piper Shores will be hosting a gala lobster bake for residents on August 17th.
“The Piper Shores community has been a welcome addition to the town of Scarborough over these last five years,” said Scarborough Town Manager Ron Owens. “Although there were some concerns about the project early on, I think Piper Shores is a good example of what can be achieved with proper planning and a long term vision.”
Today, many seniors are looking for a lifecare solution that offers them an active, independent lifestyle accompanied with the peace of mind that there are also additional levels of care available to them. As the baby boom generation reaches retirement age, this trend will continue.
“The lifecare advantages that Piper Shores offers has definitely filled a need, and we have established ourselves as a very unique retirement community in Maine,” said Deb Riddell, Executive Director at Piper Shores. “We are very proud to have reached this milestone and look forward to many more to come.”
Fully occupied, the Piper Shores community is home to 350 residents supported by nearly 170 staff members. Several Piper Shores’ residents have called the beautiful oceanside property home since the very beginning and are looking forward to the upcoming celebration.
“This is the best decision I ever made,” says Piper Shores resident Trudy Ford. “The biggest change over the years has been the way the grounds keep improving. The trees, plants and shrubs are well established now and are just beautiful.”
“I can remember traveling down a bumpy dirt road to get to my cottage, the only one on the street,” says Jack Smith. “It’s amazing the way the place has filled in. There are 40 cottages here now. Whether it’s residents in the main building, the cottages or Holbrook (onsite assisted living and skilled nursing care), you really get a strong sense of community here. It really is a great bunch of people.”
Piper Shores continues to invest in the community for its residents as well. In recent years, Piper Shores has added a woodworking shop, garden area, boardwalk and putting green to the property. Additionally, opportunities to participate in continuing education, lectures, concerts and the annual resident art show are just a few activities residents enjoy.
Piper Shores actively maintains contact with a growing list of seniors interested in becoming Piper Shores residents. For more information, call 207-883-8700.
